Men Spot House Fire, Save People Inside (12/27/2011)

Per DFD Media Release

The DFD responded to a reported structure fire at 112 Grace Street. On arrival the units found heavy fire and smoke showing from the front of the single story house. The dispatchers reported that there may be victims in the house, however the occupants were out of the structure when firefighters arrived. Firefighters from three engines and a ladder rersponded and were on scene within minutes to attack the blaze. A downed power line from the house hampered firefighters until personnel from Danville Power and Light were able to disconnected the service from the pole. It took firefighters approximately 15 minutes to control the fire and they remained on scene for nearly 2 1/2 hours with the overhaul and investigation into the cause. A firefighter with shoulder injuries was transported to the Danville Regional Medical Center and is expected to be released by early afternoon.

Danville fire units from Industrial Ave,West Main and Westover Dr along with a ladder and support vehicle from Bridge St station responded to a reported structure fire at 224 Arlington Place.The unit from Industrial Ave arrived on the scene first and on further investigation when entering the structure reported visible smoke and they were going to mask up.The structure sustained minor damage and cause of ignition is currently under investigation.(20) fire personnel were on the scene during various periods of this alarm for two hours and eleven minutes

A fire in a vacant dwelling at 122 Aye St. early Saturday morning resulted in a total loss of the structure.

The Danville Fire Department received the call at 3:50 AM and responded with units from Industrial Ave., Bridge St., and Airport Dr. In all, three engines, one aerial truck, and two Battalion Chiefs responded with a total of 16 personnel.

Engine 3 arrived on scene at 3:56 AM and reported a working fire in a small one story house. The initial Incident Commander indicated that the entire structure was involved in fire and that personnel would be operating in a defensive strategy and would attack the fire from the exterior and not enter the building. Ladder 1 was set up and directed a large stream of water onto the fire to bring it under control. Engine company crews then used smaller volume hand-lines to completely extinguish the remaining fire. Personnel conducted searches to determine if anyone was in the structure. No one was found.

The house was completely destroyed with just one wall and part of the roof remaining. The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation by the Danville Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office. Information from the investigation will be released when it becomes available. There were no injuries.

Units from the Danville Life Saving Crew, the Danville Police Department, and the Danville Electric Department provided support and assistance at the scene.

Firefighters remained on scene for 3 hours and 4 minutes.

Per DFD Media Release

A fire in a residental home at 156 Laramie Circle on Monday night resulted in moderate damage to the home but did extensive damage to the kitchen. The occupants were able to get out of the house safely but their pet dachshund whose name was Jr. was still inside when fire crews arrived. A neighbor notified command that the dog was still inside at which time command notified inside fire crews that Jr. was still in the house. With the help of a thermal imaging camera the dog was located and brought outside of the structure. Crews then administered oxygen to the dog. He appeared too be in good spirits, barking and wagging his tail. A successful rescue for Jr.

The Danville Fire Department received the call at 1036p.m. and responded with units from the Bridge St., Industrial Ave., Westover Dr., and West Main St. Stations. In all, three engines, one aerial truck, and three support vehicles responded with a total of 18 personnel.

The crew of Engine 4 entered the home and proceeded to the kitchen where they encountered heavy heat and smoke. Smoke had spread throughout the complex which made visibility almost imposible.They were also able to determine that the fire was moving into the attic area. The fire appeared to have started from unattended cooking, but smoke damage was throughout the house. The crew from Ladder 1 was sent to the house to assist with smoke removal, utility control, and rescue. Engine 6 assisted with medical treatment along with personnel from Engine 3. Engines 6 along with Ladder 1 responded for support and manpower. All crews had to search two floors.

Guided by the interior crews, the Ladder crew along with Engine 4 and 3 assisted with searching the home to insure there were no additional people were inside, none found. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

The cause and origin of the fire was unattended cooking and was investigated by the Danville Fire Department.

Firefighters remained on scene for 1 hour 26 minutes

this morning at 7:02 am. Engine three from

Industrial Avenue

arrived two minutes after they were dispatched. Other apparatus that responded were Engine 4 from the West Main station, Engine 6 from Westover drive, Ladder 1 and a battalion chief from

Bridge Street

. Also responding were two Fire Marshalls and a safety officer. Upon arrival they found a two story home with heavy fire coming from the left side windows and heavy smoke throughout the structure. They received information that all occupants were outside and safe so they focused their attention to fire attack. Units made entry to the house and were able to bring the main body of the fire under control fairly quickly. Units remained on scene for two and a half hours extinguishing hot spots and investigating the cause of the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be an extension cord that was overloaded by an air conditioner. The Danville Fire Departments Fire Marshalls’ office would like to caution people of the dangers of using extension cords to run appliances. Most extension cords are not rated to supply the amount of current that appliances require and they in turn overheat and can cause fires.

Danville Fire Department was dispatched to 125 Wooding Ave. (Sal's) at 5:30 pm June 5. The first unit to arrive on scene reported smoke coming from top vent and attic vents. Attack lines were deployed through the front entrance and the fire was found to be smoldering. It had used up most of the oxygen in the building and flames were slightly visible. Before dying down the fire had damaged approximately half of the interior. Due to the extreme heat the rest of the interior had heat damage. The remainder of the fire was extinguished and the building was ventilated. Three Engines, Two Ladder Trucks and three Command Vehicles responded with 18 personnel.

Update:

The fire that occurred at Sals Restaurant, 125 Wooding Avenue on 6-5-11 has been determined to have been set. The fire remains under investigation and anyone with information concerning the fire is asked to contact the Danville Fire Marshal's office at 799-5226.

Attack lines were pulled and the fire was attacked from the outside while lines were directed to protect the house next door. One Engine is still on scene at this time checking for spot fires and doing an investigation with the Fire Marshall. This was a vacant house and there were no injuries.

At 2pm Friday, March 11, 2011 Danville Fire Department responded to a reported house fire. On arrival a dryer was found to have fire inside it in an attached garage. Firefighters quickly removed dryer to outside and extinguished fire. Units were on scene for about 30 minutes with 15 personnel and 3 engines and one Ladder truck and a command vehicle. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation on scene by fire department personnel.

Members of the FDNY will be arriving in Danville on March 31st for the Martinsville race weekend. As it stands now, 13 members from the Marine Division and other stations are coming this year. They are scheduled to race go karts at VIR on Saturday April 2nd at 1400hrs if anyone wants to come and possibly race with them. Other activities are tentative, so call me closer to that weekend and I’ll get you up to speed. The sponsors I have had up to this year have had to decline in helping due to the economic crunch. If anyone would like to help out, please call me ASAP as I am struggling to pull things together. Some of you have already donated money and I thank you for your support. This yearly event could not take place without your help.

The Danville Fire Department responded to 310 Wimbish Dr. at 5:02pm today to a reported house fire. First arriving units on the scene reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the entire front of a single story house. All occupants were reportedly out of the house. The fire was knocked down within Ten minutes. Crews then moved inside to finish extinguishing the fire and do a primary and secondary search of the structure to make sure no one was inside. The house suffered heavy damage from fire, smoke and water. Three Engines, One Ladder Truck, One Command Vehicle and Three Staff Vehicles along with Sixteen fire personnel were on the scene for approximately Two hours. The Fire Marshall's Offce determined that the cause was shorted electrical equipment. The house cannot be lived in and the family will be staying with other family members.

Three engines, One ladder and command vehicle responded to a garage fire behind 1145 Halifax Road. On arrivel firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming out of the structure. There was a loud explosion shortly after arrival.

Fire Marshal’s findings:

The investigation to the cause of the fire and explosion during firefighting operations has been completed.

While firefighting efforts were underway inside of the garage a loud and powerful explosion occurred inside of the garage. This explosion lifted the roof off the structure and blew debris across the street. The four firefighters that were inside of the garage at the time of the explosion were able to escape without injuries. Two other firefighters that were on the outside of the garage next to a doorway when the explosion occurred took most of the force from the blast. They were checked on the scene for injuries and returned to duty. The explosion was found to be from a 10 lb bottle of nitrous oxide that exploded during the fire. The bottle ruptured due to the heat from the fire and sent shrapnel all through the garage and into the street.

The fire was caused by a heat lamp that was installed to close to exposed roof trusses in a shed that was attached to the garage. The fire then spread from the shed to the inside of the garage

A passerby noticed the fire and phoned 911. They began trying to rescue several dogs that were kept inside of the shed. They were successful in rescuing a few of the dogs before the firefighters arrived on the scene. Unfortunately four dogs did perish in the fire.

Danville Fire Department was dispatched to Purdum Woods Apts. on Richmond Blvd. at 1243 am this morning. Arriving units found a kitchen in one apartment involved in fire. Firefighters got a quick knock down and extinguishment. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen area and the entire apartment received smoke damage. Two other apartments required smoke removal. No one was injured. The family will stay with other family members until they can move back home. 3 engines, 2 ladder truck and one command unit was on the scene for about one hour with 15 personnel.

Danville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at the above address today at noon. First unit on scene reported heavy smoke coming from a single story residential house. An interior attack was initiated and the fire was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes. The house sustained heavy damage and a family of two were left homeless. The department was on the scene for about two and one half hours with 3 engines, one ladder truck, a command vehicle and 15 personnel. The Danville Burn Foundation and the Red Cross worked with the family to get them lodging and other essentials and to provide for their well-being.

One occupant was transported to the Emergency Room with smoke inhalation. This was the only injury. Today at 11:05 a.m. several packages of magnesium phosphide (a fumigant) fell out of the vehicle in which it was being transported.

The Fire Department and subsequently the Danville Hazardous Materials Team responded to the scene.

Other City of Danville Departments, the Danville Life Saving Crew, American Red Cross, and Salvation Army also responded.

The area in the vicinity of Kent Street and the section of Eastwood Drive from South Boston Road to Halifax Road was evacuated. Evacuation shelters were set up at the Glenwood Recreation Center and also, if needed, Glenwood Elementary School. It was reported 35 to 40 people had responded to the shelter. The children in the affected area attending Glenwood Elementary were to be held at the school and the parents of those students were being notified.

Members of the Hazardous Materials Team are working to mitigate the situation. There were no civilian injuries. Three firefighters were transported to the Danville Regional Medical Center for observation, and are reported as doing well.

DFD units responded to a reported structure fire at the above address. Upon arrival the first fire unit reported heavy smoke showing from the structure. Upon futher investigation found fire had extended into the attic and heavy fire involvement. A defensive strategy was deployed and units were able to make a knock down. After the fire was knocked down crews were able to go into the front portion of the house before at which time the dwelling was deemed unsafe. The fire was extinguished. The DFD responded with 4 engines, 1 ladders and 3 support vehicles with 19 personnel and remained on scene for3 hours and 9 min.

Danville Fire Department was dispatched to Blue Ridge Fiber Board at 4am 10/11/10. On arrival a large fire was visible outside one of the main buildings. The fire had broken through into the building but was held in check by automatic sprinklers. Most of the fire was in fiber board stacked in yard next to the building. 3 Engines, 2 Ladder Apparatus and 2 Command Units responded with 14 personnel and 1 Engine and 1 Ladder Apparatus and a Command Vehicle were still on the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the fire at Blue Ridge Fiber board has been completed. The investigation found that heat built up over a period of days in the stacks of fiber board and was not able to be dissipated due to the material being stacked tightly and wrapped in plastic. This heat build up reached the fiber board’s ignition temperature and began to burn. The stacks of fiber board were against an exterior wall of the plant. The fire extended from the stacks and into the plant. The automatic sprinkler system inside of the plant was activated from the heat of the fire. The sprinkler system was able to hold the fire from spreading any further inside of the building

.

The damage to the plant was limited to the exterior wall and a small office inside. The number of pallets of fiber board burned where in the range of one hundred.

Danville Fire Department "B" shift units was dispatched to possible explosion at Glen Oak Golf Club this morning at approximately 1:45 this morning. First units on scene reported building fully involved.
Three Engines, One Ladder and two Command units along with 15 personnel were on scene for approximately four hours with one unit still on scene checking for hot spots.

Double LODD's at Rocky Mount Vol. Fire Department

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the Rocky Mount Vol. Fire Department as two brothers were called to heaven yesterday afternoon. Chief Posey Dillon and Firefighter Danny Altice were tragically killed yesterday following an accident responding to a structure fire around 4:30 PM. The fire truck swerved to miss a vehicle that pulled out in front of them and wrecked.

Structure Fire 750 Holbrook Ave.

On May 27, 2010 at around 9:11 AM, Danville Fire Department responded to 750 Holbrook Ave. for a reported structure fire. Arriving units found heavy smoke and fire conditions from the rear of the structure with fire also showing fromn the front door. Twenty three firefighters responded on four engines, one ladder truck, four support vehicles. Units were on scene approximately 2 hours. The fire cause is determined to be unattended cooking.

Structure Fire 424 Memorial Drive

19 firefighters, 4 Engines, 3 Ladders,1 Water Tender and 2 Command vehicles responded to 424 Memorial Drive April 30, location of the former Dan River White Mill for reports of smoke coming from the roof of the structure. Once units arrived on scene, they found smoke concentrated around one elevator tower. Units extinguished the fire which located in the vicinity of the vent system adjacent to the elevator tower.No injuries reported. Fire units were on scene for approximately four hours. The fire is under investigation at this time.

2010 Martinsville Race weekend with FDNY

It’s getting close to crunch time. Right now it looks like 8 will be coming this year. Thanks to each of you that have given money, resources, and time preparing for the weekend. Here is what I need and what’s going on so far.

Items needed;

15 passenger van (the one that was promised is gone)

Air mattresses for them to sleep on

Fishing gear to be used at VIR on Friday

Help serving breakfast on Saturday, and dinner on Saturday (Ringgold FD)

Money to help with beverages and food for the weekend

Things scheduled;

Hot laps at VIR for them on Friday March 26th, fishing at VIR as well.

Dinner at station 5 1730 Friday March 26th.

Breakfast at Ringgold FD Saturday morning 0730

Kart racing at VIR Saturday from 1000 till 1200 (everyone is invited to race with them)

Dinner at Ringgold FD at 1700 (pig pickin)

Meet and greet at Hams 2000 until (Saturday night)

Departure for Martinsville Speedway at 0730 Sunday morning K-Mart parking lot (there may be a couple of extra tickets if anyone is interested)

Martinsville Race Weekend 2010

Fellow Firefighters,

Members of FDNY (Marine 1&9) will be visiting us for the Martinsville Nascar Race weekend March 26, 27 & 28th. They are scheduled to arrive Thursday the 26th and leave Monday the 29th. The only activities scheduled for them at this time are go-kart racing at VIR Saturday the 27th 1000 till 1200 and the race on Sunday. The rest is open for suggestions. If you would like to race against them at VIR or go to the race on Sunday, please let me know ASAP. I plan on ordering tickets by Saturday January 30th, each Danville member will be responsible for the price of their own ticket for Sundays race. Call me for pricing and other information. If you would like to help out with the cost of the weekend, or know of anyone who could help sponsor, please contact me. I need your help to continue this special weekend. Listed are a few things that are needed;

15 passenger van for the weekend
Meals for them at fire stations
Monetary donations for food, beverages, room accommodations, tickets, and kart racing.

"C" shift units responded to a fire Friday 8/28 on Banner while "A" shift units responded to a fire on Roberts yesterday. Hope to be getting some picture of them soon. But until then, BE SAFE!!!

Haz Mat Incident West Main Street

DFD units E-4, E-7, units 71, 62, 52, 53 and the HazMat response trailor responded to a busted water main at a business on West main Street yesterday 8/18/09 around 11:00 AM. Units on scene discovered a "smell" of what was intially thought to be a petroleum. Haz Mat personnel responded to the scene and began sampling the product. Approximately 47,000 gallons of water filled the basement of this business. Units remained on scene until after midnight controlling the product from getting into nearby water sources. Manufacturer: Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc., of Mebane, N.C.

Hazard: An electrostatic discharge can damage the unit, causing it not to warn consumers of a fire.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received two reported incidents of smoke alarm malfunctions involving electrostatic discharge during installation. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves Kidde dual sensor smoke alarms model PI2000. The alarms can be identified by two buttons, “HUSH” and “PUSH AND HOLD TO TEST WEEKLY,” which are located on the front/center of the alarm. The model number and date code are on the back of the smoke alarm. Only date codes 2008 Aug.01 through 2009 May 04 are included in this recall.

Structure fire Lexington Avenue

"C" shift units responded to a structure fire on Lexington Avenue shortly after Midnight Sunday morning. A defensive strategy was intially put in place. The Fire Marshal's Office is to investigate the actual cause of the fire this week. This fire is in addition to the fires at Cabin Lake, Vandola Road(street sweeper fire) and Oakwood circle which have occured in the past week or so.

At approximatley 3:50 Am this morning DFD units responded to a confirmed structure fire of an apartment complex off of Cherokee Court at Cabin Lake. Units E-5, E-2, E-3, E-7, E-1, L-1, Tower 1, and units 51, 52, 62, 63,101, 71 and 73 responded. The fire was contained in about 3 hours and stopped it at the firewall. This is the third major fire to occur at this housing complex since 1997. More information to follow...

Propane Leak causes Evacuation on Westover Drive for 1/4 mile...

Yesterday 5/27/09, DFD crews responded to a 500 gallon propane leak near Riverside Equipment. Vapors were suppressed by hoseline, while hazmat crews shut the propane tank down. Four Engines and a Ladder along with DFD support members responded and was on scene approximately 2 hours. An evacuation of a quarter mile raduis was intiated by DPD and DFD. Buisnesses and homes near the leak were evacuated and people were allowed to return after the air quality was monitored and leak contained.

Details about Fire on Lansbury Drive 5/6/09

E-5 (Fowler, Cassell, Burke, Satterfield) responded. Smoke could be seen from Franklin Tpke. E-5 performed a forward lay of 400’ of 4” from the hydrant on the corner of Westview Dr. and Lansbury. Neighbors advised that there was a victim still inside the residence. Burke pulled a 1.75” preconnect while Capt. Fowler performed the walk around. Command was transferred to Unit 71 (Harvey). E-5 assumed “Rescue” and forced entry into the house and L-1 (Guill, Reaves, Poteat) assumed Fire Attack . We performed a right hand search. Smoke conditions inside allow minor visibility about 18”-24” off the floor. As Satterfield made the right turn down the hallway he saw the victim lying in the hallway. When Satterfield found her they were about 10’-12’ inside the house. Burke dropped the line and assisted Satterfield with removing the victim from the house and taking her to the front yard. The victim was breathing during their initial assessment. E-5's group administered oxygen and fully immobilized the victim. Once DLSC arrived, the victim was placed in the ambulance.

Two Fires over the Weekend

"B" shift and "A" shift got down and dirty over the weekend on two separate fires. "B" shift fought a fire at a duplex on Bryant Ave. on Saturday evening that left one unit severly damaged and two others units with smoke and water damage."A" shift fought a kitchen fire on Noel Ave. on Sunday evening. Seems like the "Good ole Days" are among us again with all the fires we have had recently.....

Structure Fire with Rescue

"A" shift units arrived on scene at 626 Lansbury Drive yesterday morning at around 7:30 AM to find a residence with fire and smoke showing from the roof and rear of the dwelling. A victim, laying unresponsive inside and was rescued from the fire and resuscitated by Engine 5's crew....GOOD JOB GUYS!!!! More to follow....

Train Collides With Van

Last evening Danville Firefighters responded to an accident involving a train and a van. The incident occured on Lynn Street near Lee St. It is reported that the van ran out of gas on tracks and the person driving was attempting to push it off of the tracks while the other person had remained near the van up until the train collided with it. One person is seriously injured and has been transported to a hospital out of town.
